Mary Alice and Joe thought they where going to have a normal summer with their perfectly normal grandmother. Wrong. So wrong. There grandma might as well be the craziest grandma anyone could ever have. And the kindest. And the funniest. And the trickiest. Although Mary Alice and Joe are a long way from Chicago everything is going to be okay as they learn important lessons and make friends. My brothers and I laughed so much when we read this book for school. It is really funny.

What happens when Joey and his sister, Mary Alice -- two city slickers from Chicago -- make their annual summer visits to Grandma Dowdel's seemingly sleepy Illinois town? August 1929: They see their first corpse, and he isn't resting easy.
August 1930: The Cowgill boys terrorize the town, and Grandma fights back. August 1931: Joey and Mary Alice help Grandma trespass, poach, catch the sheriff in his underwear, and feed the hungry -- all in one day. And there's more, as Joey and Mary Alice make seven summer trips to Grandma's -- each one funnier than the year before -- in self-contained chapters that readers can enjoy as short stories or take together for a rollicking good novel. In the tradition of American humorists from Mark Twain to Flannery O'Connor, popular author Richard Peck has created a memorable world filled with characters who, like Grandma herself, are larger than life and twice as entertaining.

so funny and exciting!!!
I absolutely loved this cunning book by Richard Peck! The book is broken into nine different mini stories about Joey and Mary Alice visiting their crazy, small town grandmother. While the kids are visiting they have many adventure and there are surprises around every corner!
Its...interesting. I had to read it for a book club, and the Grandma in the story is just..different. I think it was an OK book for how old it was
I got kind of confused when I read it. I think that it was about a son going on a vacation with his crazy grandmother. You might understand it, have fun!
i like the grandma she's funny haha!!
I like it a lot I read at school!
I think it is a really good book!
not good not bad
I did not like this book. A long way from Chicago is about a brother and sister who are forced to visit their grandmother over the summer. I found the plot and characters boring. I do not recommend this book.
