In Chinese, peng you means friend. But in any language, all Anna knows for certain is that friendship is complicated.

When Anna needs company, she turns to her books. Whether traveling through A Wrinkle in Time, or peering over My Side of the Mountain, books provide what real life cannot—constant companionship and insight into her changing world.

Books, however, can’t tell Anna how to find a true friend. She’ll have to discover that on her own. In the tradition of classics like Maud Hart Lovelace’s Betsy-Tacy books and Eleanor Estes’ One Hundred Dresses, this novel subtly explores what it takes to make friends and what it means to be one.

i know some chinease now because there is chinease in this book. its pretty good.

This book is okay it wasn't my favorite.

I have read this book and it was really good. Great storyline and characters. I really enjoyed reading this book. I would recommend this book.

Anna is losing her best friends Laura. To two other girls, and Anna's only friends is just the school crossing guard Ray.Anna struggles with family issues such as. Her dad and mom fight which causes him to yell and breaking things, and her mom not knowing much English which Embarrasses her.So Anna turns to books, and making her bags. One of the girls are mean to Laura so she goes back to being friends.Near the ending of the book Laura and Anna are best friends again, and Anna learns that her mom not being able to speak English very well is just like her not being able to speak Chinese to well.Overall the book was pretty interesting.

This girl has a bad temper. She takes everything too serious. No offense. I still don't understand why the title is named The Year of the Book.

The title is called Year of the Book because in the book there were many references to Chinese customs. Legend says, that nearly every animal on Earth at that time raced. The rat was very tricky and rode on the cow's back so he would get first. So the rat is first, the cow is second, and so on. So the first year is Year of the Rat, second is Year of the Cow. Anna loves reading books, so in this book is "The Year of the Book." It's kind of complicated but you will get it :D

This was a very interesting book from the start and I bet many people could relate to it. It isn't exactly my favorite book in the world but it was okay, slow pacing. Anna is kind of losing her best friend, while her best friend is hanging out with Allison, a girl Anna doesn't usually associate with. So Anna turns to books and now she loves books (something I could relate to, I LOVE READING). Also Anna is dealing with something else, since she is an American Chinese, her mom doesn't really speak really good English and is better at speaking Chinese, while Anna and her father are opposite. Anna is kind of embarrassed about her mom, but later understands that she doesn't speak that good Chinese, while her mom doesn't speak that good English, so they are equal, so now she understands.

The book seems very good to me. The title seems weird but, the author probably has a meaning for it. The author is probably Chinese because it's like the Chinese zodiac.

I really like this charming little middle grade book. I appreciate that it tells a contemporary story with an ABC (American Born Chinese) protagonist that has some Chinese cultural things sprinkled through without making the heritage a “problem” in her life or in her relationship with her friends.

When I read the title I was like why would somebody make a year of the book? To me I think it's a cool book to read.

It wasn't exactly the best book ever. It was okay. It taught you lessons about friendship, but it was a little babyish. It was about a girl who loses friends, but has her books. In the end she gets her best friend back.
